About Meissen
Europe's oldest porcelain city, 25 km upstream from Dresden, with the 1710 Meissen Manufactory and the medieval Albrechtsburg Castle overlooking the Elbe.
Meissen is a small medieval town on the Elbe 25 kilometres upstream from Dresden, famous throughout the world for one thing: it is where European porcelain was born. In 1708, alchemist Johann Friedrich Böttger, working under the patronage of Augustus the Strong, succeeded in producing the first true hard-paste porcelain in Europe, accidentally solving a secret that Chinese craftsmen had guarded for a thousand years. Augustus immediately established the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory in 1710 in the Albrechtsburg Castle above the town to protect the secret. The Manufactory moved to its current premises in 1865 and remains in continuous operation to this day, producing handmade porcelain in the same tradition since 1710. The Meissen Manufactory Museum offers guided tours showing the complete production process, from hand-throwing to hand-painting. Above the town, the medieval Albrechtsburg Castle, a Gothic masterpiece of the 1470s, one of the earliest purpose-built residential palaces in Germany, and the Cathedral offer panoramic views over the Elbe and the surrounding wine country.
Did you know? European porcelain was invented in Meissen in 1708 by Johann Friedrich Böttger, who had been imprisoned by Augustus the Strong and threatened with death if he failed to produce gold, instead he produced something far more valuable.
