About Theaterplatz
The grandest square in Dresden's Baroque core, flanked by the Semperoper, Zwinger, and the equestrian statue of King Johann, the ceremonial heart of the city.
Theaterplatz is the grandest and most theatrical square in Dresden, forming the ceremonial heart of the Baroque city centre. The square is flanked on three sides by three of Dresden's greatest architectural landmarks: to the west, the Semperoper (State Opera House); to the south, the Zwinger palace complex; and to the east, the Catholic Court Church (Hofkirche), with the Residenzschloss tower beyond. In the centre of the square stands the magnificent equestrian statue of King Johann of Saxony, cast in bronze in 1889, depicting the king on horseback. The square's proportions are those of a grand outdoor stage set, and the play of the Baroque facades around it creates one of the finest architectural ensembles in northern Europe. The square was the scene of Nazi rallies in the 1930s and was heavily damaged in 1945; it was meticulously restored in the post-reunification era. Today it hosts open-air concerts, Christmas markets, and serves as the primary ceremonial space of the city.
Did you know? King Johann's equestrian statue in Theaterplatz stands here not just because he was king, but because he spent decades translating Dante's Divine Comedy into German under the academic pseudonym 'Philalethes', a remarkable royal scholar.
