About Hofkirche (Catholic Court Church)
Dresden's magnificent Catholic cathedral, built 1739-1755 by Augustus III who converted to Catholicism to gain the Polish throne, featuring 78 Baroque saints on its exterior and the royal crypt below.
The Hofkirche, formally the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, is Dresden's Catholic cathedral and one of the most important Baroque churches in Germany. It was built between 1739 and 1755 by the Italian architect Gaetano Chiaveri for Augustus III, son of Augustus the Strong, who had converted to Catholicism (as his father had before him) in order to claim the Polish throne. Building a Catholic cathedral in what was staunchly Protestant Saxony required careful political management; the church was constructed so that its main entrance faced away from the Protestant townspeople, and entry was originally restricted. The exterior is adorned with 78 statues of saints and Church figures by Lorenzo Mattielli, arranged on the balustrades around the roofline, one of the most theatrical Catholic facades in Germany. Inside, the highlight is the 1750 Silbermann organ, one of the most historically significant organs in Germany. The royal crypt beneath the church contains the remains of 49 members of the Wettin dynasty, including the heart of Augustus the Strong (kept separately from his body, which is buried in Kraków).
Did you know? The royal crypt beneath the Hofkirche contains 49 Wettin dynasty members, including a special bronze urn holding only the heart of Augustus the Strong, whose body was kept in Kraków when he died as King of Poland.
