About Grosser Garten
Dresden's largest park, a magnificent Baroque landscape garden from 1676 with a summer palace, miniature railway, and the city's zoo at its edge.
The Grosser Garten, Great Garden, is Dresden's largest park and one of the oldest Baroque garden landscapes in Germany. Laid out from 1676 under the patronage of Elector John George III, it originally served as a hunting ground and formal pleasure garden for the Saxon court. The park covers approximately 1.8 square kilometres in a largely symmetrical Baroque design, with long straight avenues, formal parterres, and a central summer palace (Palais im Großen Garten) built between 1678 and 1683, one of the earliest Baroque palace buildings in Saxony. Over the following centuries, the strictly formal layout was softened by the addition of more naturalistic landscape elements, creating a pleasing mix of formal and informal zones. The park is crossed by the Dresdner Parkeisenbahn, a miniature gauge railway operating since 1950, originally staffed by young pioneers and now a beloved family attraction. Dresden Zoo occupies the western edge of the park. The Grosser Garten is the city's most important green lung and hosts numerous cultural events.
