About Lago di Braies

Lago di Braies, the Pragser Wildsee, a green mountain lake below the cliffs of the Croda del Becco, with its wooden boathouse and rowing boats, the start of the Alta Via 1 high route.

The lake lies at about 1,500 metres and was formed when a landslide blocked a stream. It is up to 36 metres deep and very cold. In May 1945 prominent prisoners of the SS were freed at the hotel on its shore.

The lake is very busy in summer, and the road may need a booking at peak times. A path goes round the shore. The rowing boats are for hire in summer only, and the lake freezes in winter.
