About Bolzano

Bolzano, in German Bozen, the capital of South Tyrol, a market town where Italian and German meet, with the medieval arcades of the Lauben, Piazza Walther and its Gothic cathedral.

Bolzano grew in the late 12th century as a market on the trade road from Germany to Venice over the Brenner Pass. It became Italian after the First World War. The city is officially bilingual, in Italian and German.

The squares and arcades are open at all times. Shops under the arcades keep shop hours. The cathedral has its own visiting hours. Summer afternoons in the valley can be very hot.

Did you know? The Lauben of Bolzano, a medieval market street of about 300 metres, were rebuilt with stone arcades after a great fire in 1224.
