About Marmolada
The Marmolada, at 3,343 metres the highest mountain of the Dolomites, with the largest glacier of the range, a First World War front and the scene of a deadly glacier collapse in 2022.
Punta Penia, the summit, was first climbed in 1864. In the First World War the front ran across the mountain. On 3 July 2022 part of the glacier collapsed near Punta Rocca and killed 11 people.
A cable car from Malga Ciapela climbs to Punta Rocca in season; check its status before you go. Glacier walking is restricted. Never go onto the glacier without a mountain guide.
