About National Museum Cardiff
A free museum of art and natural history in Cathays Park, from the Evolution of Wales galleries to an astonishing Impressionist collection left by the Davies sisters, Monet to Van Gogh.
National Museum Cardiff, on the civic square of Cathays Park, combines natural history and art under one roof, with free admission. The National Museum of Wales received its royal charter in 1907; this neoclassical building, by Arnold Dunbar Smith and Cecil Brewer, opened in 1922 as a truncated version of their original design. It is one of seven sites of Amgueddfa Cymru, Museum Wales, and includes the popular Evolution of Wales galleries.
Its outstanding art came from the sisters Gwendoline and Margaret Davies, who bequeathed an internationally important collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works, including Monet, Renoir, Cézanne and Van Gogh, and a bronze cast of Rodin's 'The Kiss'. The museum also holds one of the world's largest groups of paintings by Honoré Daumier. Admission is free, supported by a Welsh Government grant, with free timed tickets usually requested.
