About Cardiff Castle
In the capital's heart, a castle of three ages: a Roman fort, a Norman keep on the largest motte in Wales, and William Burges's dazzling Victorian Gothic interiors for the Marquess of Bute.
Cardiff Castle (Castell Caerdydd) stands in the centre of the Welsh capital and spans nearly two thousand years. A Roman fort was built here in the mid-3rd century, its line partly followed by the present walls; a Norman motte-and-bailey was raised in the late 11th century, its roughly 12-metre mound the largest castle motte in Wales, topped by a twelve-sided medieval shell keep.
From 1868 the 3rd Marquess of Bute commissioned the architect William Burges to transform the lodgings into lavish Victorian Gothic Revival interiors, described by the historian Megan Aldrich as 'the most magnificent that the Gothic Revival ever achieved'. Burges's Clock Tower rises about 40 metres. The neighbouring Animal Wall carries fifteen stone animals (nine from the 1880s, six added in 1931). The Bute family gave the castle to Cardiff in 1947.
Did you know? The castle's lavish interiors were created for the 3rd Marquess of Bute, in his day said to be the richest man in the world, by the architect William Burges from 1868, each room a fantastical Victorian daydream.
