About Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog)

Mid Wales's range of flat-topped sandstone mountains, crowned by Pen y Fan at 886 metres, a friendly but serious summit with a Bronze Age burial cairn and half of Wales in the view.

The Brecon Beacons, renamed Bannau Brycheiniog National Park on 17 April 2023, are a range of flat-topped Old Red Sandstone mountains in Powys, mid Wales. Their highest summit, Pen y Fan, reaches 886 metres (2,907 ft), the highest peak in South Wales and the highest in Britain south of Cadair Idris. The summit and surrounding land are owned by the National Trust, and the top is marked by a reconstructed Bronze Age burial cairn.

The Welsh name means 'the peaks of Brycheiniog', an early medieval kingdom; the park authority adopted it on the grounds that a burning beacon was no longer a fitting emblem for an environmental body. Designated in 1957, the park covers 1,344 square kilometres and receives around 4.4 million visitors a year. Pen y Fan and neighbouring Corn Du (871 m) are used in British special-forces selection, including the march known as the Fan Dance.

Did you know? In 2023 the Brecon Beacons took its Welsh name, Bannau Brycheiniog, with the park authority saying a burning beacon was no longer a fitting emblem for a body fighting climate change.
