About Conwy Castle
One of Edward I's mightiest Welsh fortresses, eight round towers on a rock above the Conwy, ringed by a near-complete medieval walled town, a UNESCO-listed masterpiece of military architecture.
Conwy Castle was built for Edward I of England between 1283 and 1287, during his conquest of Wales, on a rock overlooking the River Conwy. Designed by the king's master mason James of St George, the castle and the walled town cost around £15,000. The castle has eight large round towers and two barbicans, divided into an inner and outer ward, its defences relying on the sheer rock rather than concentric walls.
It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site 'Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd', inscribed in 1986 with Beaumaris, Caernarfon and Harlech, which UNESCO calls among the finest examples of late-13th and early-14th-century military architecture in Europe. Conwy's town walls run about 1.3 km with 21 towers and three original gateways, among the best-preserved town defences in Europe. The castle was built over a cleared Cistercian abbey and a Welsh royal residence, and is cared for by Cadw.
Did you know? Conwy Castle and its town walls were built in just four or five years, from 1283 to 1287, for around £15,000, by Edward I's master mason James of St George, probably Europe's finest castle-builder.
