About Llandudno & the Great Orme
Wales's grand Victorian seaside resort, a crescent of hotels and the country's longest pier beneath the Great Orme, a headland of tram rides, sea views and Bronze Age copper mines.
Llandudno is the largest seaside resort in Wales, laid out from the 1850s as a planned Victorian resort on land owned by the Mostyn family, and long known as the 'Queen of the Welsh Resorts'. Its curving promenade of Victorian hotels is one of the best preserved in Britain. Llandudno Pier, opened on 1 August 1877, is at 2,295 feet (700 m) the longest pier in Wales and a Grade II* listed structure.
The town is dominated by the Great Orme (Welsh Y Gogarth), a limestone headland about 207 metres high, reached on foot, by the Llandudno Cable Car, or by the Great Orme Tramway, opened in 1902–1903 and Britain's only remaining cable-operated street tramway. Inside the headland are Bronze Age copper mines where large-scale mining began around 4,000 years ago; since 1987 more than five miles of prehistoric tunnels have been uncovered, and the site opened to the public in 1991.
Did you know? Llandudno was built on purpose: from the 1850s the Mostyn family laid out a planned Victorian resort, giving it the sweeping promenade and elegant hotels that make it the 'Queen of the Welsh Resorts'.
