About Portmeirion

A pastel Italianate fantasy village on a north Wales estuary, built over fifty years by Clough Williams-Ellis and famous as The Village in the cult series The Prisoner.

Portmeirion is an Italianate village on a wooded peninsula on the Dwyryd estuary in Gwynedd, near Porthmadog. It was designed and built by the Welsh architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis between 1925 and 1975, in a Mediterranean style of pastel buildings, domes and colonnades around a central piazza. It is often said to be modelled on Portofino, but Williams-Ellis denied copying any single place, saying he wanted to evoke a Mediterranean atmosphere.

In 1966–67 the village was used as 'The Village' in the cult television series The Prisoner, starring Patrick McGoohan. It is owned and run by a charitable trust as a hotel with self-catering cottages, shops and restaurants, and is surrounded by sub-tropical woodland gardens known in Welsh as Y Gwyllt ('the wild place'). The Portmeirion Pottery brand, founded by Clough's daughter Susan Williams-Ellis, takes its name from the village.

Did you know? Portmeirion was the lifelong project of one architect, Clough Williams-Ellis, who built it piece by piece from 1925 to 1975 and called it a home for fallen buildings, rescuing fragments from elsewhere.
