About Betws-y-Coed
The grey-stone gateway village of Snowdonia, where three rivers meet, known for Telford's iron Waterloo Bridge of 1815 and the white cascades of nearby Swallow Falls.
Betws-y-Coed is a village in the Conwy valley, set where the Rivers Conwy, Llugwy and Lledr meet, and the main gateway into Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park. Its name means roughly 'prayer house in the wood'. It grew from a hamlet into a popular Victorian tourist resort, a growth boosted by the arrival of the railway. Thomas Telford's cast-iron Waterloo Bridge, carrying the old London-to-Holyhead road over the Conwy, opened in 1815 and is inscribed with the year of the Battle of Waterloo.
Just west of the village, Swallow Falls (Welsh Rhaeadr Ewynnol) is a multiple-cascade waterfall on the Afon Llugwy and one of the area's best-known attractions, popular since the 1930s. Its English name derives from the Welsh Rhaeadr y Wennol, 'the waterfall of the swallow'; the form Rhaeadr Ewynnol ('foaming waterfall') is a later coinage. In the village centre, the historic Pont-y-Pair bridge crosses the Afon Llugwy near St Mary's Church.
Did you know? Telford's Waterloo Bridge at the village was cast in iron in 1815 and bears an inscription recording that it was built in the year of the Battle of Waterloo. It still carries traffic today.
