About Cardiff Bay
Cardiff's reinvented waterfront on a man-made lake: the slate-clad Wales Millennium Centre with its glowing poetry, the glass Senedd of the Welsh Parliament, and the old coal-age Pierhead.
Cardiff Bay is the Welsh capital's redeveloped waterfront, built around an artificial freshwater lake of about 200 hectares created when the 1.1 km Cardiff Bay Barrage closed in November 1999, impounding the rivers Taff and Ely. Its landmark is the Wales Millennium Centre, opened in 2004, designed by Jonathan Adams and clad in about 2,000 tonnes of recycled Welsh slate beneath a bronze-coloured steel dome.
The centre's façade carries two lines of poetry by Gwyneth Lewis, in Welsh and English ('In these stones horizons sing'), which are not literal translations of each other; its main theatre seats about 1,897 and houses Welsh National Opera and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Alongside stands the Senedd, home of the Welsh Parliament, designed by the Richard Rogers Partnership and opened on St David's Day 2006, topped by a wind-driven rotating cowl.
Did you know? Cut right through the bronze front of the Wales Millennium Centre are two lines of poetry by Gwyneth Lewis, one Welsh and one English. They are not translations of each other; each language gets its own thought.
