About Red Abbey Tower

The oldest standing structure in Cork city, a 14th-century tower from the Augustinian friary of SS Peter and Paul, a rare survivor of medieval Cork amid the surrounding modern streets.

Red Abbey Tower is the oldest standing structure in Cork city, a compelling fragment of medieval Ireland that has survived centuries of change in a quiet corner of the city's south side. The tower is all that remains of a once-substantial Augustinian friary dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, founded in the early 14th century. The friary was dissolved during Henry VIII's Reformation suppression of Irish monasteries in the 1540s, and subsequent centuries of neglect, rebuilding, and urban development reduced the complex to this single tower. The distinctive red sandstone from which it is built gives it its name. The tower has witnessed some of Cork's most turbulent historical moments, including the Siege of Cork in 1690 when it served as a military observation point for the Williamite forces. Today it stands quietly in a small park, an extraordinary link to medieval Cork.

Did you know? Red Abbey Tower dates to the early 14th century, making it over 700 years old, the oldest surviving above-ground structure in Cork city.
