About Cork City Hall

Cork's grand Art Deco civic building opened in 1936, commanding a prominent position on the north channel of the River Lee, replacing the original City Hall burnt during Ireland's War of Independence.

Cork City Hall stands as one of the finest Art Deco civic buildings in Ireland, a confident and elegant expression of the young Irish Free State's ambitions. The original Cork City Hall was among the buildings burned by British forces during the infamous Burning of Cork in December 1920, an act of reprisal during the War of Independence that destroyed much of Cork's city centre. The replacement building, designed by the Cork architects Jones and Kelly in the Art Deco style then fashionable for civic architecture, was opened in 1936. Its long, symmetrical facade of Portland stone, with its central tower and colonnaded entrance, makes a commanding statement on the north bank of the River Lee. The building houses the council chamber, administrative offices, and a grand reception room that has hosted visiting heads of state and dignitaries.
