Cork Butter Museum occupies a handsome building beside the historic Shandon Butter Market, just steps from St Anne's Church. It tells the remarkable story of how Cork became the largest butter market in the world during the 18th and 19th centuries, when Irish butter, graded, branded, and exported through Cork, was consumed across Europe, North America, and even as far as the Caribbean and India. At its peak, the Cork Butter Exchange graded and shipped over 500,000 firkins of butter annually. The museum traces the entire butter trade through engaging exhibits that cover everything from the science of dairying and butter-making, through the commercial and regulatory systems of the Exchange, to the social history of the farming families whose livelihoods depended on this extraordinary trade.
