About Roman Forum and the Bema

The Roman forum of Corinth, the centre of the city refounded by Julius Caesar, with shops, temples and the Bema, the speaker's platform where tradition places Saint Paul before the governor Gallio.

The Romans sacked Corinth in 146 BC, and Julius Caesar refounded it as a colony in 44 BC. Its forum, almost 200 by 100 metres, was split into two levels by a row of shops around the Bema. The Bema, of the mid-first century AD, is thought to be where Saint Paul stood before Gallio.

The forum is part of the archaeological site of Ancient Corinth, with one ticket for the site and the museum. The ground is uneven gravel with little shade. Hours are shorter from November.

Did you know? After the Romans burned Corinth in 146 BC, Julius Caesar refounded the city as a Roman colony in 44 BC, shortly before his death.
