About Peirene Fountain and the Lechaion Road

The Peirene fountain of Ancient Corinth, a famous spring of Greek myth with Roman arched chambers, beside the Lechaion Road, the paved main street that led north to the harbour.

Water was managed here from the Geometric period, and by the second century BC six chambers drew on deep basins and long tunnels under the forum. The arched front you see is mostly Roman. The Lechaion Road, paved in the later first century AD, ran about 3 km to the harbour of Lechaion.

Both are part of the archaeological site of Ancient Corinth, on the same ticket as the museum. The chambers may be partly fenced, so keep to the paths. Hours are shorter from November.

Did you know? Greek myth says the Peirene spring at Corinth was made by the hoof of the winged horse Pegasus, or that it was a mother's tears for her son.
