About Corinth Canal
The Corinth Canal, a straight sea-level channel a little over 6 km long, cut through the rock of the Isthmus between 1882 and 1893, with sheer walls and bridges high above the narrow water.
The idea goes back to antiquity, and Nero began digging in AD 67. The modern canal was completed in 1893 but opened to ships only in 1894, because of landslides. It is about 24.6 metres wide at the surface and 8 metres deep, too small for most modern ships.
You can look down into the cut from the bridges. The canal closed for slope works in October 2025 and reopened to ships in June 2026, but works continue, so boat trips depend on schedules. Two bridges at the ends can sink to let boats pass.
Did you know? The Corinth Canal was completed in July 1893 after eleven years of work, but landslides kept it closed to ships until November 1894.
