About Carlton Cannes

The twin-domed Belle Époque grand hotel on the Croisette, opened in 1911 and a byword for film-festival glamour, reopened in 2023 after a full restoration as a Regent hotel.

The Carlton is the great Belle Époque hotel of the Croisette, at number 58, a long cream-white palace with two domed corner towers facing the sea. It was built in 1909 to 1910 for the Swiss hotelier Henry Ruhl, to designs by the architects Charles Dalmas and Marcellin Mayère, and opened on 30 January 1911; a second wing added in 1912 to 1913 gave it its present form and its second dome. It has been a listed historic monument since 1984.

The Carlton has been bound up with cinema since the film festival began in 1946, its terrace and beach a stage for the stars each May; Grace Kelly stayed here during the 1955 festival and met Prince Rainier of Monaco. After closing for a major renovation in 2020, it reopened on 13 March 2023 as the Carlton Cannes, a Regent Hotel, restored and extended around a large new garden. Its twin domes are famously said, as a local legend, to echo the figure of a celebrated Belle Époque courtesan.

Did you know? The Carlton was built in 1909 to 1910 and opened in January 1911; a second wing added in 1912 to 1913 gave it its matching pair of domes. It has been a listed historic monument since 1984.
