About Notre-Dame-de-l'Espérance
The Gothic parish church crowning Le Suquet, begun in 1521 and built over more than a century, with a Renaissance porch, a square bell tower and a view over the old town.
Notre-Dame-de-l'Espérance is the parish church on the place de la Castre at the summit of Le Suquet, protected as a historic monument together with the Suquet tower and the Sainte-Anne chapel. Begun in 1521 with money raised by the people of Cannes, it was built slowly over more than a century and opened for worship in the 1630s. It replaced the older fortified church of Notre-Dame-du-Puy, now the Sainte-Anne chapel, which had grown too small.
The church is Gothic in style, with a Renaissance porch and a square bell tower carrying a clock. Its side chapels were given over one by one to the craft confraternities of Cannes, who decorated them, and its treasures include a rare 14th-century Burgundian sculpture of Saint Anne and a carved wooden Christ. The gallery organ was built in Pavia in 1857. Each July the forecourt becomes the stage of the Nuits musicales du Suquet, an open-air classical-music festival.
