About Le Suquet
The old town of Cannes: a steep hill of narrow cobbled lanes and ochre houses above the old port, crowned by a medieval watchtower, where the fishing village began.
Le Suquet, also called Mont-Chevalier, is the oldest quarter of Cannes, a hill of about 66 metres rising above the old port at the western end of the bay. This was the original settlement: a Ligurian people set a hilltop stronghold here, and it later became the fishermen's quarter, its steep lanes laid out centuries ago and now largely given over to walkers and restaurants. The climbing cobbled Rue Saint-Antoine is its best-known street.
The land was given to the abbey of Lérins around 1030, and the monks raised the great square watchtower, about 22 metres high, begun in the 11th century against corsair and Saracen raids and completed in 1365. In 1447 the townspeople formed a free commune to loosen the monks' hold. On the summit, around the place de la Castre, the tower, the Sainte-Anne chapel and the church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Espérance are protected together as historic monuments, and each July the church forecourt hosts the Nuits musicales du Suquet.
Did you know? Le Suquet is the original site of Cannes, settled by a Ligurian people on a hill of about 66 metres; it was the fishermen's quarter long before the town became a resort.
