About Marché Forville
The covered Provençal market at the foot of Le Suquet, built in 1929 to 1932, where the market gardeners and fishermen of the Cannes bay bring their produce and the day's catch.
The Marché Forville is the covered food market of Cannes, standing on the rue du Marché-Forville at the foot of Le Suquet, behind the town hall. The present hall was built between 1929 and 1932 by the architect Henri Bret, replacing an 1884 wooden market, in reinforced concrete dressed with Provençal-style facades of balconies, pergolas and ochre render. Covering about 3,000 square metres, it is listed as remarkable 20th-century architecture.
The market sells the produce of the market gardeners of the Cannes basin and the fresh catch of the fishermen of the bay, and entry is free. A major renovation of the hall and its surroundings is under way, including a planned public rooftop garden of flavours and fragrances; while the works continue, many of the producers and fishermen have been trading from a temporary pavilion on the nearby Allées de la Liberté. It remains the place where Cannes shops for its Provençal table.
Did you know? The market hall was built between 1929 and 1932 by the architect Henri Bret, in modern reinforced concrete dressed in full Provençal style; it is listed as notable 20th-century architecture.
