About Allées de la Liberté
A plane-shaded square facing the old port, with a cast-iron 1880 bandstand, a statue of Lord Brougham, pétanque players, and a daily flower market under the trees.
The Allées de la Liberté are a broad, plane-tree-shaded promenade and square facing the old port, beside the town hall of Cannes. At its heart stands a cast-iron bandstand, designed by the city architect Louis Hourlier and inaugurated in 1880, listed as a historic monument and still used for concerts. On the square stands a statue of Lord Brougham, the British lord whose arrival in 1834 helped turn Cannes into a resort, inaugurated in 1878 and recreated in 1953 after the original was destroyed.
The Allées are a daily gathering place. Flower stalls set up under the plane trees most days, and at weekends an antiques and craft market joins them; pétanque players throw their boules near the bandstand. The town hall of 1876 and a First World War memorial of 1927 stand along the square. A 2024 redevelopment replanted the plane trees and citrus and added a pond, fountains and new stone paving.
Did you know? The cast-iron bandstand at the centre of the Allées was designed by the city architect Louis Hourlier and inaugurated in 1880; it is a listed historic monument and still hosts concerts.
