About Windmills of Bruges
Four historic windmills crowning the eastern ramparts of Bruges, including the Sint Janshuis mill of 1770 which is still operational and open to visitors.
The four windmills on the eastern ramparts of Bruges are one of the most picturesque and characteristic sights of the city, their great sails turning against the Flemish sky above the green earthen walls and water-filled moat below. Windmills were essential to the economy of medieval Bruges, grinding grain for the city's bakers and fulling cloth for its weavers. At one time, dozens of mills stood on the city's ramparts; today four remain. Sint Janshuis Mill, dating from 1770, is the most easterly and is still operated on summer days by volunteer millers; visitors can climb inside to see the mechanism working. Bonne Chiere Mill, also original, is similarly preserved. The two other mills were relocated here from other parts of Flanders in the 20th century. The rampart promenade connecting the mills offers some of the finest views of the Flemish landscape around Bruges.
Did you know? At their peak, up to 30 windmills stood on the ramparts surrounding Bruges; today only four remain, of which two are original to the site.
