About De Halve Maan Brewery
Bruges's oldest active brewery, founded in 1564, home to Brugse Zot and Straffe Hendrik beers, and famous for its unique underground beer pipeline running 3 km to the bottling plant.
De Halve Maan (The Half Moon) is Bruges's oldest active brewery, with roots going back to 1564. Located just steps from the Begijnhof, it produces two celebrated beers: Brugse Zot (the "Bruges Fool"), a blonde ale, and Straffe Hendrik (the "Strong Henry"), a strong amber ale. The brewery offers excellent guided tours that take visitors through the historic brewing facilities, cellars, and rooftop terrace with panoramic city views. In 2016, the brewery completed a remarkable feat of engineering: a 3.2-kilometre underground pipeline running from the historic brewing hall in the city centre to the modern bottling plant at the edge of town, allowing the city's streets and buildings to remain undisturbed while dramatically increasing production capacity. Beer enthusiasts can visit the pipe's entry point as part of the brewery tour.
Did you know? In 2016, De Halve Maan completed a 3.2 km underground beer pipeline connecting the brewery to its bottling plant, funded partly by public crowdfunding.
