About Sint-Janshospitaal Pharmacy Museum
A remarkably preserved medieval hospital pharmacy with original equipment, period medicine chests, and a historic herb garden, part of the Sint-Janshospitaal complex.
The Pharmacy Museum at Sint-Janshospitaal is a remarkable survival of a medieval hospital apothecary, offering visitors an intimate encounter with the medical and pharmaceutical practices of pre-modern Europe. The pharmacy itself dates from the 18th century in its current form, but occupies a space that has served as the hospital's apothecary since the medieval period. The interior is extraordinarily well preserved, with its original wooden shelving, glazed ceramic pots labelled with medicinal preparations, glass alembics and distillation equipment, and a dispensing counter behind which the apothecary worked. The adjacent herb garden, planted with medicinal plants that would have been used in the pharmacy, adds a living dimension to the exhibition. The museum is typically visited in combination with the Memling Museum in the same complex.
Did you know? The Sint-Janshospitaal pharmacy served patients continuously from the medieval period until the hospital's closure in 1978, one of the longest operating apothecaries in European history.
