About Jerusalem Chapel

A unique private chapel built in 1428 by the Adornes family, modelled on the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, and one of the most extraordinary medieval buildings in Belgium.

The Jerusalem Chapel (Jeruzalemkerk) is one of the most unusual and fascinating medieval buildings in all of Belgium, and indeed in all of northern Europe. Built in 1428 by the Adornes family, a wealthy merchant dynasty of Genoese origin who had settled in Bruges, it was modelled, as closely as 15th-century Flemish craftsmen could achieve, on the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. The family had made pilgrimages to the Holy Land and brought back measured drawings and models of the holy sites. The result is a building of extraordinary character: a small, dark, intensely atmospheric chapel with a centralised plan, a crypt containing a copy of the tomb of Christ, and a tower crowned with a distinctive bulbous lantern derived from Eastern models. The chapel is still owned by the Adornes family and has been in continuous use as a place of worship for nearly six centuries.

Did you know? The Jerusalem Chapel has been owned by the same family, the Adornes, continuously since 1428, making it one of the longest family-owned religious buildings in Europe.
