About Folklore Museum
A charming museum in 17th-century almshouses depicting traditional Flemish life through authentic period room interiors, guild history, and folk traditions.
The Folklore Museum (Museum voor Volkskunde) in Bruges occupies a row of restored 17th-century almshouses in the Rolweg, near the Jeruzalemkerk in the northeastern quarter of the old city. The museum recreates traditional Flemish domestic and working life through a series of authentic period room interiors: a cobbler's workshop, a hat-maker's shop, a sweet shop, a schoolroom, a pharmacy, and a peasant kitchen, among others. The exhibits explain the traditional crafts, trades, and customs of Flanders from the 17th to the early 20th century, with a particular emphasis on Bruges and the surrounding region. At the end of the visit, a traditional Belgian pub called 't Zwart Kat (The Black Cat) serves local beers, providing an appropriately authentic conclusion to the museum experience.
Did you know? Bruges has an unusually high number of surviving medieval and early modern almshouses, many of which still function as sheltered housing today, just as they did centuries ago.
