About Gruuthuse Museum

A magnificent 15th-century Gothic palace of the Lords of Gruuthuse, housing a decorative arts collection and an extraordinary oratory window overlooking the Church of Our Lady.

The Gruuthuse Museum is housed in one of the finest late medieval townhouses in Belgium, the former palace of the Lords of Gruuthuse, a powerful noble family who owed their wealth to the monopoly on gruut, a mixture of herbs and spices used to flavour beer before hops became standard. The building dates largely from the 15th century and is an extraordinary survival of Gothic domestic architecture, with its ornate facade, courtyard, and great hall. The museum's collection comprises over 2,500 objects spanning tapestries, furniture, silverware, ceramics, weapons, and lace. The most celebrated feature is the small oratory, a private prayer room with a Gothic window that looks directly into the nave of the adjacent Church of Our Lady, allowing the lord and lady of the house to attend mass without leaving home.

Did you know? The name "Gruuthuse" comes from gruut, a herbal mixture used to flavour beer before hops became standard, the sale of which was the source of the family's great wealth.
