About Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church
The bombed-out shell of a Wilhelmine church deliberately preserved as an anti-war memorial, 'the Hollow Tooth', alongside a stunning new octagonal church with deep blue Chartres-glass windows.
The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is one of Berlin's most distinctive landmarks, a bombed-out ruin and a new church standing side by side as a memorial and a place of worship. The original church was built between 1891 and 1895 as a memorial to Kaiser Wilhelm I, the first German Emperor. It was severely damaged on 22 November 1943 when Allied bombers destroyed much of the western tower; only a fragment of the tower's shell remained. After the war, Berliners debated whether to demolish or preserve the ruin, the decision to keep it as a permanent anti-war memorial was taken in 1956. The ruined tower, nicknamed 'the Hollow Tooth' by Berliners, now stands as a powerful reminder of wartime destruction. Alongside it, architect Egon Eiermann completed a new octagonal church in 1963 with extraordinary walls of deep blue honeycomb glass designed with Chartres Cathedral glass-maker Gabriel Loire. The blue interior creates an ethereal, otherworldly atmosphere.
Did you know? Berliners nicknamed the bombed tower 'the Hollow Tooth' ('der Hohle Zahn') for its jagged shape, a name that perfectly captures its character as an open wound in the cityscape.
