About Hackescher Markt & Hackesche Höfe
A vibrant Scheunenviertel district hub featuring the Art Nouveau Hackesche Höfe courtyards of 1906, galleries, boutiques, cafes, and the restored heritage of Berlin's pre-war Jewish community.
Hackescher Markt is the social hub of Mitte's Scheunenviertel ('Barn Quarter') district, a neighborhood with deep roots in Jewish Berlin history. The neighbourhood's jewel is the Hackesche Höfe, a complex of eight interconnected Art Nouveau courtyards built in 1906-07. The first courtyard, with its extraordinary decorative tilework in earth tones and coloured glazed tiles designed by August Endell, is one of the finest examples of Jugendstil architecture in Berlin. The eight courtyards flow one into another, filled with galleries, art-house cinemas, boutiques, and restaurants. The broader Scheunenviertel was historically the heart of Berlin's working-class Jewish community, the neighbourhood from which Jews were systematically deported during the Nazi period. After decades of GDR-era neglect, the neighbourhood was comprehensively restored after 1990 and became one of Berlin's most fashionable and creative districts. The train viaduct arches beneath the elevated S-Bahn line have been converted into bars and restaurants.
Did you know? The Hackesche Höfe's extraordinary tilework, designed by August Endell in 1906, covers the entire first courtyard in organic Art Nouveau patterns of earth-tone and glazed coloured tiles.
