About Unter den Linden
Berlin's grandest historic boulevard, 1.5km of linden-tree-lined promenade from the Brandenburg Gate to Museum Island, flanked by embassies, palaces, and cultural institutions.
Unter den Linden, 'Under the Linden Trees', is Berlin's most celebrated boulevard, running 1.5 kilometres from the Brandenburg Gate eastward to the Schlossbrücke bridge at the entrance to Museum Island. The avenue was laid out in the 17th century as a riding path connecting the Berlin Palace to the Tiergarten hunting grounds; Frederick the Great transformed it into a grand baroque promenade lined with linden trees in the 18th century and built the great institutions that line it today: the State Opera, St Hedwig's Cathedral, the Arsenal (now the German Historical Museum), and the Humboldt University. A famous equestrian statue of Frederick the Great by Christian Daniel Rauch, removed during the GDR era, stands again at the boulevard's midpoint. The avenue was Berlin's equivalent of the Champs-Élysées, the stage for military parades, victory celebrations, and grand diplomatic processions throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.
Did you know? The linden trees lining the boulevard were cut down by desperate Berliners for firewood in the winters of 1945-46, the replacements planted after the war are now over 70 years old.
