About Kurfürstendamm (Ku'damm)
West Berlin's defining boulevard, a 3.5km stretch of upmarket shops, hotels, and restaurants anchored by the bombed shell of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, a defiant symbol of post-war rebuilding.
The Kurfürstendamm, universally known as the Ku'damm, is the grand commercial boulevard of West Berlin, stretching 3.5 kilometres westward from Breitscheidplatz through the affluent Charlottenburg district to Halensee. Originally a bridle path leading to the Grunewald hunting forest used by Prussian electors, its name means 'Electors' Causeway', it was transformed in the 1880s under Bismarck into a prestigious tree-lined boulevard modelled on the Champs-Élysées, lined with grand apartment buildings, hotels, restaurants, theatres, and cafes. During the Cold War, the Ku'damm became the showcase boulevard of West Berlin, the vibrant, glamorous, consumer capitalist counterpart to the austere GDR showpiece of East Berlin's Karl-Marx-Allee. Today it remains West Berlin's main commercial artery, though some shine has transferred to Mitte since reunification. Its anchor is Breitscheidplatz, where the bombed shell of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church stands as an anti-war memorial.
Did you know? During the Cold War the Ku'damm was deliberately developed as West Berlin's showcase of capitalist prosperity, a visible rebuke to East Berlin's austerity visible even from the other side of the Wall.
