About Alexanderplatz
East Berlin's focal public square, home to the GDR-era World Clock showing time in 148 cities, the 368-metre TV Tower, and the monumental architecture of the socialist state, all now buzzing with commerce.
Alexanderplatz, universally known as 'Alex', is the historic commercial and transport heart of East Berlin, one of the busiest squares in Germany. Named after Tsar Alexander I following his 1805 visit to Berlin, the square was completely rebuilt by the GDR in the late 1960s and early 1970s as a showcase of socialist urban planning, with the iconic TV Tower (Fernsehturm) as its centrepiece. The Weltzeituhr (World Clock) installed in 1969 shows the time in 148 cities worldwide and remains a beloved meeting point. The GDR-era buildings, the Forum Hotel, the Haus des Lehrers with its mosaic frieze, the Centrum Warenhaus, frame the vast open space. Alfred Döblin's 1929 novel 'Berlin Alexanderplatz' immortalised the square as the turbulent heart of Weimar Berlin. Today the square hums with commerce, street food, trams, and the constant movement of Berliners.
Did you know? The square takes its name from Tsar Alexander I of Russia, who visited Berlin in 1805, making it one of the few major German squares named after a foreign head of state.
