About Berlin TV Tower (Fernsehturm)

At 368 metres, East Germany's proudest achievement and Germany's tallest structure, with a revolving café at 207 metres and the 'Pope's Revenge' cross reflected in its sphere that delighted West Berliners.

The Berlin TV Tower, Fernsehturm, stands 368 metres tall at Alexanderplatz and is the most visible landmark in Berlin, visible from nearly everywhere in the city. Built by the GDR government between 1965 and 1969 as a bold statement of socialist technological achievement and a deliberate provocation to the West visible across the Wall, it remains the tallest structure in Germany. The sphere at 207 metres houses a revolving restaurant and observation deck. West Berliners and the church nicknamed the cross-like reflection that appears on the sphere when the sun shines on it 'Pope's Revenge' or 'the Revenge of the Pope', a wry joke about a supposedly atheist state involuntarily displaying a Christian symbol. The East German government, unable to prevent the reflection, reportedly tried to coat the sphere with non-reflective material but failed. Today the tower is one of Berlin's most popular attractions, with queues on clear days.

Did you know? When sunlight hits the sphere at certain angles, it reflects a cross shape, West Berliners called this 'the Pope's Revenge' because the officially atheist GDR had inadvertently created a Christian symbol visible from miles away.
