The Jewish Historical Museum (Joods Historisch Museum) in Amsterdam's historic Jewish Quarter occupies four interconnected Ashkenazic synagogues from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, creating a remarkable architectural ensemble in the heart of what was once one of Europe's largest Jewish communities. The museum chronicles the history of Jews in the Netherlands from the Middle Ages to the present, with particular focus on the Amsterdam Jewish community which numbered around 80,000 before the Second World War, of whom approximately 75% were murdered in the Holocaust. The museum explores Jewish religious life, culture, and identity through objects, photographs, and multimedia presentations, placing Dutch Jewish history within the broader context of European Jewish experience. It is part of the National Holocaust Memorial of the Netherlands and works in partnership with the nearby Portuguese Synagogue. The complex includes the Great Synagogue (1671), the Obbene Shul (1686), and two more eighteenth-century synagogues.
