About Portuguese Synagogue
A breathtaking 1675 synagogue still lit entirely by candlelight, one of the largest and best-preserved Sephardic synagogues in the world.
The Portuguese Synagogue (Esnoga or Snoge in Portuguese) is one of the most remarkable religious buildings in the world, a seventeenth-century synagogue of extraordinary beauty and historic significance, completed in 1675 for Amsterdam's Sephardic Jewish community. The Sephardim were Jews who had been expelled from Spain in 1492 and from Portugal in 1497, and who eventually found refuge in the tolerant atmosphere of Amsterdam, where they built one of the most prosperous Jewish communities in the world. The synagogue is built in a Dutch classical style by architect Elias Bouman, its grand interior measuring approximately 28 by 37 metres, lit entirely by 1,000 candles in four chandeliers and seventy-two holders, electricity has never been installed. The synagogue is still in active use for Sabbath and holiday services and remains largely unchanged since its construction. It is widely considered one of the finest seventeenth-century buildings in the Netherlands.
