About Rembrandt House Museum

The canal house where Rembrandt lived and worked from 1639 to 1658, meticulously reconstructed with his studio, etching press, and 17th-century furnishings.

The Rembrandt House Museum at Jodenbreestraat 4 in Amsterdam is one of the most authentic artist's house museums in the world, occupying the canal house where Rembrandt van Rijn lived and worked during the most creatively productive decades of his life. Rembrandt purchased the house in 1639 for 13,000 guilders, an enormous sum, and lived here with his wife Saskia and later with his housekeeper Hendrickje Stoffels, painting his greatest masterpieces in the studio upstairs. The house was repossessed in 1658 when Rembrandt declared insolvency, having spent far beyond his means on art, curiosities, and furnishings. The museum has meticulously recreated the interior based on the inventory of Rembrandt's possessions made at the time of his bankruptcy, including his working studio, etching studio, salon, kitchen, and bedroom. Regular demonstrations show how Rembrandt prepared his paints and made his famous etchings. The museum also holds one of the world's finest collections of Rembrandt's etchings.

Did you know? Rembrandt bought the house for 13,000 guilders in 1639, but only paid a deposit, borrowed the rest, and never paid it off, which contributed to his bankruptcy 19 years later.
