About Oude Kerk
Amsterdam's oldest building (c. 1250), a Gothic church standing at the heart of the Red Light District, where Rembrandt's wife is buried and contemporary art is exhibited.
The Oude Kerk (Old Church) is Amsterdam's oldest building and one of the most historically significant churches in the Netherlands. Construction began around 1250, making it the oldest structure in the city, and continued for three centuries, with the current building representing a layering of Gothic architectural phases from the thirteenth through sixteenth centuries. The church was originally Catholic and dedicated to Saint Nicholas, patron saint of Amsterdam. In 1578, during the Alteration, it was converted to Protestant use like all other Amsterdam churches. Its interior contains remarkable historic features including painted vault panels, medieval choir stalls, and a magnificent seventeenth-century organ. The graves of several notable Amsterdammers are here, including Rembrandt's wife Saskia van Uylenburgh, who died in 1642. The church's extraordinary setting, entirely surrounded by the window booths of the Red Light District, makes it one of the most remarkable sights in all of Amsterdam. Today it functions primarily as a contemporary art space, hosting challenging exhibitions.
Did you know? More than 2,500 people are buried beneath the Oude Kerk's floor tiles, including Rembrandt's wife Saskia, making it one of Amsterdam's largest graveyards.
