About Spui Square
Amsterdam's literary heart, a handsome square with the famous Athenaeum bookshop, a weekly book market, and the provocative Lieverdje sculpture at its centre.
Spui (pronounced "spow") is one of Amsterdam's most charming and intellectually vibrant squares, traditionally associated with bookshops, academics, and political debate. The square is anchored by the Athenaeum Nieuwscentrum, one of the finest independent bookshops and newsagents in the Netherlands, and on Fridays hosts a popular open-air second-hand book market that draws bibliophiles from across the city. At the centre of the square stands a small bronze statue called the Lieverdje ("Dear Little Rascal"), a gift from a cigarette company in 1960 that became an unlikely icon of 1960s counterculture, Provo activists gathered here every Saturday night, using the statue as a focal point for their provocative "happenings." The square is surrounded by several historic brown cafés and is considered the ideal starting point for exploring Amsterdam's literary and academic scene. Several major Dutch publishers and literary organisations have their offices nearby.
Did you know? Café Hoppe on the Spui has been serving beer since 1670, making it one of Amsterdam's oldest continuously operating drinking establishments.
