About National Museum of Lithuania
Lithuania's largest museum of national history, ethnography and archaeology, housed in the New Arsenal below Gediminas Hill, with the monument to King Mindaugas standing outside its main entrance.
The National Museum of Lithuania is the country's largest museum of Lithuanian history, ethnography and archaeology, at the foot of Gediminas Hill by the Vilnius Castle complex. Its main building is the New Arsenal (Naujasis arsenalas). Its origins trace to the Museum of Antiquities founded in Vilnius by Eustachy Tyszkiewicz in 1855, and after independence in 1918 a Museum of History and Ethnography formed under Jonas Basanavičius. The museum in its present form was established in 1952 and opened a permanent history exhibition in the New Arsenal in 1968.
Its collections include archaeological finds, folk art, ethnographic objects, coins, iconography and historical artefacts up to the mid-twentieth century, and it operates across several sites near the castle, including the Old Arsenal. In front of the building stands the monument to King Mindaugas, created by the sculptor Regimantas Midvikis and unveiled on 6 July 2003 to mark the 750th anniversary of his coronation. Mindaugas was the only crowned King of Lithuania, and his coronation day is now Lithuania's Statehood Day.
Did you know? The monument to King Mindaugas outside the museum was unveiled on the sixth of July 2003 for the 750th anniversary of his coronation; he was the only crowned King of Lithuania.
