About MO Museum
A private museum of Lithuanian modern and contemporary art in an angular Daniel Libeskind building, opened in 2018 and conceived as a gateway between the Old and New towns.
The MO Museum is a private museum of Lithuanian modern and contemporary art at Pylimo Street 17 in central Vilnius. It was founded by the scientists and philanthropists Viktoras and Danguolė Butkus, who began collecting around 2008 and established a Modern Art Centre in 2009. The museum opened to the public on 18 October 2018 with an inaugural exhibition titled "All Art Is About Us," and is described as the largest private art museum in Lithuania.
The building was designed by Studio Libeskind, the studio of architect Daniel Libeskind, together with Lithuania's DO Architects, who conceived it as a "cultural gateway" echoing the city's historic gates and linking the medieval Old Town with the newer city. Its angular white form covers about 3,100 square metres and features a large staircase. The collection focuses on art from the 1960s onward and includes painting, graphics, photography, sculpture, installation and video.
