About Halės Market
Vilnius's oldest working market, a covered iron-framed hall on the edge of the Old Town that opened in 1906 and still sells fresh meat, fish, produce and street food.
Halės turgus, the Halės Market, is Vilnius's oldest continuously operating market, on the southern edge of the Old Town. Markets had been held on or near the site for centuries, on ground earlier used for grain, horse and produce trading, before the present hall was built. The covered market hall opened in 1906, designed by the Vilnius engineer and architect Vaclovas Michnevičius (Wacław Michniewicz). It was built with an iron frame and reinforced-concrete elements, an economical design that won the building competition.
The hall survived both World Wars largely intact and has kept its historic form. Since 2002 it has been managed by UAB Tugva, which completed an extension and reconstruction of the century-old central hall in 2006. Today the market spans about 8,400 square metres, with modern stalls for food and goods and meat-cutting facilities under veterinary supervision. It remains a working food market selling meat, fish, produce, bread and cheese, and has also become a popular street-food destination.
