About Gediminas Avenue
Vilnius's grand main boulevard, laid out in 1836 and running about 1.75 kilometres from Cathedral Square to the Neris river, lined with state institutions, theatres, shops and cafes.
Gedimino prospektas, Gediminas Avenue, is the main representative street of Vilnius, running from Cathedral Square toward the Neris river. It was laid out in 1836, originally as St. George Avenue, and is about 1.75 kilometres long, lined with 19th- and early 20th-century architecture. Under successive rulers its name changed repeatedly: St. George under the Russian Empire, Mickiewicz Street in the Polish interwar period, and Stalin then Lenin Avenue in the Soviet era. It has carried the name Gediminas Avenue, after the grand duke credited with founding Vilnius, since 1989.
Many of Lithuania's central state institutions line the avenue, including the Government, the Seimas (Parliament) at its far end, ministries and the Constitutional Court, with cultural landmarks such as the Lithuanian National Drama Theatre, the Bank of Lithuania and the national library. Vilnius Cathedral stands at its eastern end. A major reconstruction, including Lithuania's first underground car park, was carried out before the 2003 celebration of the 750th anniversary of Mindaugas's coronation, with works completed by 2009.
Did you know? Laid out in 1836 as St. George Avenue, the boulevard was later renamed Mickiewicz Street under Polish rule, Stalin and then Lenin Avenue in Soviet times, and Gediminas Avenue since 1989.
