About Playa de la Zurriola & Gros

San Sebastián's surf beach on the eastern bank of the Urumea river, the surfers' beach where Atlantic swells arrive year-round, fronting the Kursaal and the bohemian Gros neighbourhood with its creative restaurants and bars.

La Zurriola is the surfing beach of San Sebastián, a long strip of sand on the eastern side of the Urumea river mouth, exposed to Atlantic swells that arrive year-round, making it one of the best urban surf spots in northern Spain. While La Concha on the other side of the river is calm and sheltered (its waves broken by the Isla Santa Clara), Zurriola faces the open Atlantic directly and receives consistent surf from late autumn through spring. The Kursaal building faces the beach at its western end. Behind Zurriola is the Gros neighbourhood, the easternmost of San Sebastián's urban barrios and the most bohemian: a mix of young professionals, artists, students, and longtime residents, with creative pintxos bars that are less tourist-focused than the Parte Vieja and generally considered by food-obsessed locals to offer some of the best-value pintxos in the city. The neighbourhood has its own beach culture, surf shops, and the casual atmosphere of a place that has not yet been fully "discovered" by mass tourism.

Did you know? The Basque Coast is one of the most consistent surf destinations in Europe, with swells arriving from Atlantic depressions throughout the autumn and winter. Mundaka, 70 kilometres west of San Sebastián, is famous for one of the world's longest barrelling left-hand waves, a wave that can run for 300 metres in perfect conditions.
