About Monte Ulia & Coastal Trail
The dramatic cliff-top natural park east of San Sebastián, a wild coastal landscape of rocky headlands, blowholes, and sea caves with the best coastal walking in the Basque Country, offering views back to La Concha bay and forward to the French Basque coast.
Monte Ulia is a natural park of 677 hectares east of San Sebastián, rising to 231 metres above the sea, with a dramatic Atlantic coastline of rocky cliffs, sea caves, blowholes (called bufones), and exposed headlands that are among the most spectacular on the Basque coast. The coastal trail from the eastern end of Zurriola beach, climbing up and around Monte Ulia, is one of the finest walks in northern Spain: for approximately 15 kilometres of wild clifftop scenery, the trail passes through pine and oak forest, along cliff edges above pounding Atlantic surf, past the hermitage of San Telmo (not to be confused with the museum), and eventually down to the village of Pasaia (Pasajes), one of the most beautiful natural harbours in the Basque Country. Looking back west from Monte Ulia, the view of San Sebastián, La Concha bay, the city between its two hills, the mountains behind, is one of the finest urban panoramas in Spain. The area is also home to rare coastal flora and significant bird populations during migration seasons.
Did you know? The fishing port of Pasaia (Pasajes), at the eastern end of the Monte Ulia coastal trail, has one of the most extraordinary natural harbours in Spain, a deep, narrow fjord that was used as a major port from medieval times. In 1777, a young Marquis de Lafayette sailed from Pasaia to join the American Revolutionary War, crossing the Atlantic in a ship he had equipped at his own expense.
