About Cathedral of the Good Shepherd
San Sebastián's Neo-Gothic cathedral completed in 1897, the tallest building in the city with its 75-metre spire, built to replace the parish church destroyed in the 1813 Napoleonic burning, serving as the spiritual centre of the modern city.
The Catedral del Buen Pastor (Cathedral of the Good Shepherd) is the main Catholic cathedral of San Sebastián, completed in 1897 to replace the earlier parish church that was destroyed in the 1813 sacking of the city. Designed in the Neo-Gothic style by Manuel Echave, the cathedral's 75-metre spire dominates the skyline of San Sebastián and is the tallest structure in the city. The cathedral is built of local grey sandstone and follows the French Gothic model, with flying buttresses, ribbed vaults, large stained glass windows, and the characteristic pointed arches of Gothic architecture. It is the seat of the Diocese of San Sebastián, created in 1949. The cathedral is located on the Boulevard, the wide tree-lined avenue that separates the Parte Vieja from the newer centre of the city. Despite being Neo-Gothic rather than medieval Gothic, the interior is genuinely impressive, particularly the height of the nave (25 metres) and the quality of the 19th-century stained glass.
Did you know? The Cathedral of the Good Shepherd was the tallest building in the Basque Country when it was completed in 1897, and remained the tallest in San Sebastián until the construction of modern high-rises in the late 20th century. The 75-metre spire can be seen from Monte Igueldo, Monte Urgull, and from much of the surrounding countryside.
